Christian Pagdilao is the 2013 CIF State Wrestling Champion at 145 lbs. This title is one of the most prestigious and most difficult-to-achieve individual high school awards in the nation, and Pagdilao well deserves it.
You may have seen him lap you in a WOD or two, accompanied by his friend and Santiago Wrestling teammate Chris Lacayo not too far behind. He is an extremely hard working athlete, a phenomenal wrestler and respectful young man.
Pagdilao’s athletic prowess is well displayed in the finals match against former state wrestling champion Anthony Valencia, who beat Pagdilao in the CIF Masters Final the week before. Unshaken by this loss, he headed into State finals match with poise and illuminating confidence. He controlled the match and outpointed his opponent. Christian Pagdilao proved to be a relentless and intelligent mover making him #1 in the state of California.
“It was exhilarating, euphoric, exciting, I don’t even know… It was all together one of the greatest feelings.” Pagdilao states as he grins to himself.
“One of the biggest challenges was staying focused with all the distractions and temptation around. I just tell myself it will be worth it. It will all pay off in the end. “
Goals set, priorities in check, he knows the meaning of sacrifice and hard work. He hits 3 a days, almost every day. And is the athlete to chase during our CrossFit WOD’s. Christian is a very knowledgeable and matured athlete on the mat, and in the box, here at CrossFit Proper. He knows how to position himself for success—whether it is getting after the WOD and being one of the first to finish, or tapering it back and asking for a scale, so that his body is not fatigued for an upcoming tournament. As if that is not impressive enough, his heavy training schedule does not stop him from maintaining a high GPA in his academic classes. This guy is an all around Champ.
When asked about his family’s role in his wrestling career he stated, “They were everything… They did everything that I needed. “ And he adds, “I just hope Michigan State will do the same… which I highly doubt.“ as he smirks, surely because no one can do a better job than his parents.
With steadfast and unwavering drive Christian is a respectable and honorable role model for younger student athletes, an inspiring athlete to those who meet him. With ambition shining on him like a second skin, this young man has a very successful and bright future ahead of him. We wish the best for Christian as he goes off to wrestle for and attend Michigan State University this Fall 2013. We know that he will conquer the future endeavors that are in his path.
