Two weeks ago when I was in Santa Clara I went on a 6 mile hike with a coworker. It was my first hike ever and had a 1800ft ascent. Thank goodness I do crossfit as most people were surprised that I was doing it as my first hike. It was very hard but I made it.

“I started Crossfit with one goal in mind, to prepare myself for the physical rigors of the military life that I was about to begin. As an ex-football player, I was somewhat used to long strength workouts and intense conditioning. Crossfit was unlike anything I experienced during my years as a football player. The Crossfit workouts were definitely shorter in duration than my previous workouts, yet the one hour workout at Crossfit was more intense than any workout I participated in during my years as a football player. Crossfit is not a workout to be dreaded, but to be looked forward too. The competitive yet friendly atmosphere makes for a good time and a great workout. After four months of Crossfit, I am in no doubt the best shape of my life. My goal of preparing myself for military school was not an easy one, but it was accomplished thanks to the wonderful people at Crossfit Proper.”

“…I’ve found myself in the position of not thinking I can do something, or being afraid of failing but you’ve all been great at helping me improve my mental toughness, Christian especially. Since moving to this gym, I’ve learned to string kipping pull-ups, climb a rope, do handstand push-ups, and have PR’d my deadlift, twice. I’m loving it!”

“After a month or two with CrossFit Proper, I too started hitting PR’s. We have an amazing training team. They always want us to get better, not get stuck with the same weight or a scale for too long :) It’s awesome!! I too have started to believe in myself more and more….something that at times I struggle with in CrossFit.”

Kim L:
Age: 39
Athletic background: None, I used to do pilates and walk on a treadmill.  Now I do workouts that require me to walk on my hands, do handstand pushups, and more walking lunges than anyone’s rear end can handle.
How long have you been CrossFitting? May 2009
Why do you CrossFit? I like the competitiveness that it brings out in me and the way I feel physically.
Why do you CrossFit at Proper? I love the people.  What a great group of motivated people.  The group at CFP have become like family.  I love being pushed beyond my limits and encouraged when I think I can’t go any farther.  I don’t know anywhere else that someone can complete a grueling WOD and then would come over and hold my feet so that I could finish my sit ups.  It’s really amazing!  One of my favorite moments was needing to finish my last dips and I was dead tired and my arms wouldn’t hold me up and everyone was screaming at me so loud that I started laughing and finally did finish my last 3 dips.  I love that my 4 year old son can come with us and is starting to do the crossfit exercises.  We can workout as a family and he loves showing off his box jumps (which are higher than mine I’m a little ashamed to admit).
Thing I’m most proud of: Keeping up with younger people and finally getting my first pull-ups off the band!
Favorite Quote: Jesse Batiller: “That’s too easy”  No matter what weight I’m lifting, this is what I hear.  I love being pushed to try harder.
Biggest Obstacle: I’m not very coordinated, so the gymnastic movements and the agility exercises have been really good for me.  Nobody has ever become frustrated with me even when they have to show me how to do a lift over and over.  I get frustrated with myself and we just keep practicing.  I now know that I can do anything – it just takes practice, the willingness to be taught and patient people of course.
