“Ordinary people doing extraordinary things”

A CrossFit “box” is the only place where you’ll find a 54 year old business executive competing day-in-day-out with a 29 year old female police officer; where a 43 year old mom gives 110% to try and beat a 27 year-old former wrestler’s workout time; where an 11-year-old boy can join a deadlift/burpee workout and go neck-and-neck with a 30 year old firefighter. At the end of it all, it’s high-fives all-around for a job well done and one more workout towards a fitter, happier you. These are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Spend 15 minutes talking about how we can help.

What brought you to CrossFit?
Back in 2013 I was at an all time weight of 225. Blood pressure of 190/145. Dr. said I wouldn’t see my girls graduate High School. I started going to the gym, but the old “program” didn’t yield any solid results. Rob and April, worked with me down the street from Proper and I would see them headed to the Nooner each day.  Curiosity got the best of me and Sale Marketing FitnessI tried one of Christian’s “free week” offers. I was hooked.

Favorite Proper Memory?
Getting my first muscle up.

What brought you to CrossFit?

I grew up playing sports and was unchallenged by my normal bodybuilding gym routine. I wanted a challenge and started doing Crossfit workouts in my school gym but soon decided to leave the bro world of commercial gyms and try Crossfit for real. After trying Crossfit for a few months, I was hooked. Soon thereafter, my best friend Sarah Tomas invited me to her box. I really wanted to workout with her like we used to in our high school days and also be part of a community. From day one, I connected with this community’s motto, positive vibes, and ‘be better’ mentality. I have since made Proper my home. College Student Fitness
Favorite Proper Memory?
I cherish the every day moments, like everyone coming together every night and laughing and releasing steam after a long day’s work. It’s inspiring. But most recently I really appreciated everyone coming out to support our team competition and cheering us on. It was one for the books, fam!
What is the biggest improvement for yourself?
Not being so hard on myself mentally when I don’t hit the weight I’m supposed to hit or when I’m not as strong as I think I should be at this point. Overall, having more self-grace and accepting my mental and physical condition each day.

What’s your next goal?

To focus more on powerlifting and improve my weaknesses and technique (aka learn how to activate my core, hamstrings and glutes properly lol)

What’s your favorite and least favorite movement?

Favorite movement: Anything bodyweight/gymnastics-related
Least favorite movement: Cleans and Turkish get-ups
What’s your favorite cheat meal?

Dark chocolate, without a doubt, but ‘cheat meal’ is another word for GAINS lol

Shawn S.

What brought you to Proper?
I heard about it through two of my friends who were members, Colin and Josh. I came into try a class and the rest is history.unnamed

What was your first impression of Proper?
Much different than what I expected because CrossFit to me was always shined in a negative light. When I actually went to CFP, the environment was much better than I expected because of the community and welcoming environment.

How has CrossFit improved your life?
I have more discipline in my life, and makes me strive for more of a balance in my life, in terms of my health. When work and studying really take its toll, CrossFit becomes my outlet.

What did your nutrition look like before CrossFit and after joining up?
Before – I didn’t have much variety in my diet, and it lacked nutritional diversity. A typical day looked like this: would wake up, not eat till lunch. Then lunch was anything: chinese food, burgers, Miguels Jr. Then for dinner, more fast food and never cooked my own meals. On top of that, after dinner, I’d have a late night snack: go to Donut Man, or Sourdough Burger from Jack In The Box.

After- I follow a more strict Paleo nutrition style. But with that said, it took some time to not feel the guilt of being out in a social situation and treating myself. Not overindulging, but able to just have a beer or a burger.

What is one thing people at the gym might not know about you?
I’m a musician. I play guitar, and produce music.

If there were a state, country, or city in the world that you would want to live in, where would it be?
I love SoCal, but I have a lot of friends in Tenessee. Maybe Japan? Because I love the culture.

What is your nutritional vice?
Korean BBQ

If you had one piece of advice that you would give your 20 year old self, what would it be?
Be humble, and continue to work hard. 21 year old Shawn was arrogant, lazy, and cocky.

“Sandra G.” Screen Shot 2016-11-03 at 11.44.46 AMScreen Shot 2016-11-03 at 1.33.50 PM

So, what’s her secret?

Staying active, and eating healthy in the Proper amounts.

Sounds familiar, right? Doesn’t sound like much of a secret!

Let’s backtrack a bit before we go on.

Before CrossFit, she did what the normal person would do, and start off with running. Then, graduation to a globo-gym. Just as anyone else would, she felt that having a membership at a regular gym didn’t provide her with the guidance that she needed to achieve the goals she had in sight for herself. But she was undeterred by that limitation, her search went on, and that’s when she found CrossFit.

She liked that there was coaching that came with joining a box. She liked that the workouts weren’t the same everyday, and enjoyed the intensity. Enjoyed the intensity, you might ask yourself. Who here actually enjoys that?!? As Coach Glassman said so eloquently himself, ‘Intensity f****ng sucks!’

But intensity is what drives change in physiological systems….. So bleed on, and breathe heavy, we must!

So back to the secret of transformation….

What was it about her approach that allowed her body to change? As with anyone first getting into fitness, Nutrition seems to be the uniting limiting factor everyone faces when it comes to improving body composition. We know everyone can relate, but the backbone of her struggles was sweets! Yes, sugar. A.K.A. legalized and unregulated crack!

She knew that moving more and exercising more wouldn’t be the end all to her journey for improved fitness and health. So, she modified what she ate, and became a disciplinarian with herself. She followed the well known Paleo/Clean eating template, and switched her eating schedule from 2 times a day with a big gap of time in between meals, to eating smaller frequent meals portioned just right to keep her satiated throughout the day, rather than feeling extremely hungry and longing for the last meal of the day.

But it did not come easy. It really wasn’t until 2-3 months of sticking to this protocol until she, and others around the gym to see her changing. So, as the old adage goes, patience, my friend, is a virtue.

At the end of our conversation, We asked her a couple of fun questions just to see what her answers would be, and also allow everyone to get to know her better and see her fun nature, even through the shyness.

What are your 3 favorite foods?
Tacos
Cesina (dehydrated meat)
Pancakes, pastries, and pan! (which she diligently limits)

If there was anywhere in the world you would live in, where would it be?
Alaska or Montana

Do you have any talents or interesting facts about yourself that would surprise anyone you know?
I do CrossFit. My family doesn’t know that I do it. Well, only some of them, but not all of them!

Meet James Fischer.

Very friendly man. Devoted husband and father, hard worker, the all American man. When he sets his mind to something, he tends to attack it with laser focus. Especially when it comes to improving his fitness and body composition through nutrition.

Just to give you an idea where Jame’s started before his journey into CrossFit, here’s a before picture from the beginning of this year.

Here’s his “After” picture.

What was Jame’s secret? It may not be any surprise to you, but the secret lays in his nutrition.

So what exactly did he do, or change? Let’s dive into what his diet looked like before CrossFit.

James is a salesman for an irrigation company, which means that he does a lot of commuting. People the spend a lot of time on the road tend to rely on fast food restaurants for nourishment. Panda Express and Chipotle were his typical go-to’s. Orange chicken, he said, was his Kryptonite. At the very sight of it, his salivary glands would go crazy and a hulk-like ravenous hunger would consume his very soul. To say the least, he scarfed it down like a hungry troop of buffalo wing guzzling tailgaters at a football game.

Amazingly, James does not have any sugar vices, coffee vice, nor an alcohol vice. He has not had one sip of alcohol… ever. Was he the target for designated driver duties? You bet!

Did James exercise before CrossFit?

He didn’t have an exercise program, nor did he jazzercise to Richard Simmons or Jane Fonda home fitness VHS’s from the 90’s. But it was at the beginning of this year when he finally decided that he wanted a change, and committed to making a plan of action to make it happen. A friend of his that owned a gym in Indio suggested that he start off with a meal plan that he gave to James, along with increasing his level of activity by jumping on a treadmill everyday on a high incline for 2 miles. He started to lose weight during his first month.

But then, he started to feel empty. Like a hamster on a wheel, walking those lonely steps day after day going in the same direction, yet not going anywhere…. We over dramatized that just a bit….

Then James decided to give CrossFit a try. End of story. 🙂

Of course there’s more to the story! After coming into CrossFit and being fully immersed and indoctrinated into the lifestyle behaviors of the community, his body composition improved even more, got stronger and fitter in the process, and acquired a whole new outlook on fitness and lifestyle. Along the way, he took bits and pieces of advice that we’d given him and he committed to implement them and see the process all the way through.

As with any other CrossFitter, he has more goals set aside that he would like to hit, namely a 400lb back squat, abs like Leonidus, a grizzly beard worthy of a lumberjacks approval (much like Josh Garcia or Ryan Affeldt). I’m pretty sure a muscle up fits somewhere in that list, but hasn’t been explicitly mentioned.

Make sure to give James Fisher a high five when you see him workout. He’s normally with the 4 PM crew. Great job James, and keep up the good work!

“Brittany Matiko”

30 days of CrossFit and Nutrition = RESULTS!

This busy mom had just been working out at Proper’s Nooner class for a few months when she she decided to participate in the 30 day Paleo & Running Challenge. We started with a list of do and don’t items to eat. She learned to choose and cook paleo foods as a result of the challenge and transformed herself into a bikini-ready mom in just 30 days!

Wrestling & CrossFit: Christian P.

Christian, a high-school wrestler started CrossFitting to supplement his already rigorous program. He immediately started winning and seeing results on the mat. Upon moving to Corona, he attended CrossFit Proper, continued on his rigorous program at Santiago High School wrestling and took first place in the CIF State Championship at 145 lbs in his senior year. This young man is now a wrestler at Michigan State and plans to become a doctor. However, his best accomplishment is probably leading by example. Mom and Dad began to CrossFit too and started their journey towards health and wellness! Check out his story here.

Swimming & CrossFit: Trent R.

Among his numerous success stories, Trent R. competed in the 2014 Short Course Far Western Swim Championships. Competing against over 3200 other swimmers, he took 7th and 9th in his respective races. We have been working with him to gain mobility in his muscles to move better in and out of the pool. On top of learning how to push past his limits in the workouts, he has seen awesome results and it shows! Did we mention he just turned 16?

Hard work and dedication + CrossFit = Results!

“Josh Garcia” 13227454_1152043874847589_410968950947655643_o

What brought you to Proper? I was looking for a CrossFit Gym that invests in their members and also that was affordable for my current living situation  I got both with Crossfit Proper.

What was your first impression? Has that changed? My first impression was a good one. I remember coming to a Nooner (12pm) class and the Coach that day was Christian, the owner of the gym. He treated me like I’ve been going there for years and he was very welcoming. The saying around the box is “Ohana” which means family and after being with Proper for 3 years it has become more like a family than anything.

How has CrossFit Proper improved YOUR life? How will Proper improve your life in the future? I would say physically and also mentally it has improved my life. Staying in shape has improved my life at work and mentally when things get rough I always think about pushing myself to the next level and never to quit. It’s definitely going to help me in the future when I embark on the World Race to remember not to quit when things get hard when I’m away from home!

What’s your favorite story about CrossFit Proper? After the workout we had a little dance battle with the ABC Hopes (dis)ABILITIES Fitness program participants. The participants have some kind of intellectual disability, specifically Autism and Down Syndrome and after the workout we played some music and had a dance off!   I love that our box loves to help all kinds of people regardless of their situation or beliefs.

Tell us about the World Race and what you’re raising money for? The World Race is an 11 month mission trip to 11 different countries where I will be serving side by side with missionaries that help with the homeless, orphans, and sex trafficking victims. If you’d like to learn more about his journey or to donate to the cause follow his blog.

What brought you to CrossFit?
One of my clients always wore workout clothes daily and I casually inquired about her fitness regime. We briefly chatted about our fitness goals. She instantly recommended Crossfit, and I did.

Favorite Proper Memory?
Christian waiting around the corner to scare me. I’m not one for surprises or haunted house, so that definitely got my blood pumping. I basically skipped the warm-up and went straight to the cool down wink emoticon

What is the biggest improvement for yourself?
My perspective on health has been one of my biggest improvements. Before Crossfit I equated skinny with healthy (I know super vain), but now strong is my new healthy.

What’s your next goal?
For the month of June I will be working on doing 15 pull-ups unbroken and unassisted.

What’s your favorite and least favorite movement?

MOST DESPISED: Push-ups. It’s the worst when you see your sweat falling to the ground and feel your arms shaking. Yup, push-ups are the worst!

What’s your favorite cheat meal?
Just one! I can pretty much substitute most of my foods, except white rice (sorry cauliflower rice is still cauliflower). White rice is chewy, and delicious.

*Christian if these are too cheesy please let me know. Also, I’d like to thank you for recognizing my efforts and assisting me with my goals. You’re an awesome coach!

My biggest improvement has been on my deadlift I feel a lot more comfortable while lifting and am able to lift a lot more weight than when I first started.

What’s your next goal?
My next goal is hand stand push ups because I remember struggling doing regular push ups alone so it would be totally cool to be able to do them upside down

What’s your favorite and least favorite movement?
My least favorite memory is when I almost passed out from the 15.5 workout. (But you finished! – Coach X 🙂 )

What’s your favorite cheat meal?
My favorite cheat meal is pizza pizza pizza!

What’s your favorite Proper memory?
There’s way too many to choose from. From times of doing a WOD with the class or goofing around inside and outside the gym. I think a recent favorite for mine was the 2015 open. Like always, everyone is so supportive.

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?
Being able to power lift and do Olympic lifting. I never thought about trying that, but now I can’t go even a week without touching a bar!

What’s your next goal?
Just to be better in all aspects of fitness and life …. or go to the games hahah.

What’s your favorite and least favorite movement?
Favorite movement is probably a clean or jumping! Least favorite movement is probably pull-ups or rowing.

What’s your favorite Proper memory?
My favorite Proper memory was a before and after picture we took of a tough work out. In the before picture everyone was standing and smiling, in the after picture everyone was sitting or laying on the floor, but still SMILING…

Biggest improvement for me is my body composition, I lost a lot of fat and gained back muscle I haven’t seen in awhile. Went down from a tight 36 to a 33 waist, and looking forward to size 32.

My next goal is to be able to do a muscle up.

“Melissa H.”

27 year-old, Social Worker

Missy at the Spartan Race

Missy at the Spartan Race. She loves to challenge herself both inside and outside of the box!

What brought you to CrossFit?
What brought me to crossfit was a mixture of a few things. I was bored of my gym routine, which consisted of elliptical and weight machines, I was frustrated because I wasn’t getting the results I wanted, and I really missed working out in a group setting and I missed being a part of a team. There was a crossfit gym near my office at the time, and everyday on my drive home I would see the classes running together, with music playing and I decide to try it out myself.
What’s your favorite Proper memory?
My favorite crossfit memory would have to be doing Murph last year. It was such a fun event, it was great to see everyone, I beat my previous time by 15 minutes, and completed it in under one hour, which was my goal. What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?
The biggest improvement I have seen in myself is body composition. Since starting crossfit I’ve lost 4 clothing sizes, and 45 pounds. I have seen a huge change with my energy level, and endurance since starting crossfit. I work 9+ hours a day, and before crossfit it would be really hard for me to be productive later in the day. Crossfit has helped me to be more energetic and productive at work. What’s your next goal?
My next goal is to participate in competitions and races. I want to do a crossfit competition as well as a weightlifting competition in 2015. Competitions always  motivated me to push myself and be better. I also want to continue to participate in spartan races, and complete the spartan trifecta this year. What’s your favorite and least favorite movement?
My favorite movement is back squat and my least favorite movement is double unders. What’s your favorite cheat meal?
My favorite cheat meal is pizza, beer and ice cream.

“Danielle T.”

Mom and Dance Instructor

Mom and dance instructor, Danielle, getting the well-deserved parking spot for December!

Danielle fully committed to the CrossFit lifestyle when she joined. She’s a regular at our afternoon WODs and started eating cleaner. The results are clear. She lost over 20 pounds in just a few months of CrossFit and clean eating. She’s a busy mom and a dance instructor. She makes time for CrossFit and reaps the rewards. Congratulations to Danielle for all her hard work. It really shows!

“Alberto V.”

41 years-old,Truck Driver

Alberto hitting some heavy backsquats.

Alberto is quiet and conservative at first, but once you get to know him he is a beast! You’ve probably seen him running past you in a WOD or crushing squats, but regardless of when he finishes in workouts he always has a positive attitude. He’s a family guy and fits in with Proper’s Ohana because of that. Catch him at events like Memorial Day Murph as well as Stand Up Paddleboarding at the beach or anywhere there is some ice-cold beer!

“Flo B.”

59 year old Flo doing tire flips! She’s a badmamajamma!

59 years-old, Registered Nurse

What brought you to CrossFit?
I first learned of Proper from your Mother & Tami at work.  It took me a while to decide to join because I was intimidated by it.  I’ve worked out before, but I didn’t think that I would be able to keep up with the group. Once I stepped in the box, I knew we could scale any workout and do EVERYTHING other people were doing!

What’s your favorite Proper memory?
My favorite Proper memory was when no one showed up on my 59th birthday to do the WOD & burpees except Robert Haefner.  Heck, who wants to do 59 burpees, right?!!   Well except for Robert, thanks buddy!

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?
The biggest improvement I’ve noticed is increased energy, strength, & being conscientious of what I eat through the education of my coaches to continue my journey to be stronger & better.

What’s your next goal?
My next goal is to just continue to improve at the highest level I can.  I love working out with people who cheer you on, giving high fives, & being social.  I am hooked on Proper now.  Someday soon I will do a full on pull up!

What’s your favorite and least favorite movement?

My favorite movement is the dead lift.  My least favorite as I said earlier are those darn burpees.

“Seena H.”

27 years-old, Account Executive

Seena H. is fighting cancer. She shows us that there are no valid excuses. Here she is at the deadlift.

What brought you to CrossFit?
My cousin from Florida was in town visitng and dropped into Proper. After ranting and raving how much she loved everyone I signed up for a free intro class with Christian. I told him how intimidated I was and he assured me that this was going to be a positive change to a healthier lifestyle.

Why do you love Proper?
Proper is family! Everyone is so positive and motivating. I never knew such a great group of individuals worked out under one roof.

What’s your favorite Proper memory?
My favorite proper memory was the day I put my fear of weight lifting behind me and hit my deadlift PR.

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?
Before Proper I had no hip mobility. After several techniques of hip stretches in and out of the box I can now squat comfortably and the impact running on pavement isn’t as painful. This has helped with my performance out of box as well; I can know get up and down the stair at home and to the printer and back at work.

What’s your next goal?
My next goal is to build my stamina and cardio, to be able to perform full sets.

What’s your favorite and least favorite movement?
My least favorite movement is burpees! I don’t think we can ever become friends.

ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS:

When did your fight with cancer start?
My fight started late last year as just a “cyst” and officially began this year.

What type of cancer do you have?
Breast Cancer (ductal carcinoma)

What has your experience with cancer been like?
It’s been a very unsteady and challenging. Every morning I lay in bed right when I wake up check to see what hurts, what aches, how nauseous am I and do I feel dizzy? Depending on those I determine the day I will have. Sometimes I play the reverse psychology trick on myself to overcome those feelings and make a better day out of it.

How has CrossFit helped in the battle with cancer?
CrossFit has helped me become positive! It has helped me schedule myself to be better throughout the day(eating healthy and hydrating) so I can work out in the evening. It has showed me that nothing is impossible and we all start from somewhere. I use to go to work if I could, I’d rush home lay and bed before sunset and let myself be sick.

Has there been any improvement with your health since you started crossfitting?
Yes, yes, and YES!!  My liver levels have gotten so much better. The pain from burning my spinal fluid during radiation is very minimal now. I haven’t needed to be hospitalized again for dehydration. Crossfit Proper and Coach Char have taught me how to properly stretch according to my medical conditions, what healthy foods to eat and not and how much of it my body needs to function, and that water isn’t the only boring tasteless way of hydrating.

“Lisa L.”

29 years-old, Legal Assistant at Law Firm

Mighty, mighty Lisa hittin’ her backsquat!

What brought you to CrossFit?
I reached a point in my life where I was told by my doctor that I was showing pre-diabetic symptoms and was advised that I needed to adjust my lifestyle. It was then that I knew that my health was at risk and I had to make changes before it was too late. So my sister referred me to CrossFit Proper and after doing the introduction class, I finally found the courage to sign up.

Why do you love Proper?
After I moved to Lake Elsinore, I tried other gyms and they did not end up working for me. The main thing that helped me come back to CF Proper is that everyone there, whether it was a coach or member,  supported and encouraged me (as well as others) to be better and push past the expectations I had for myself. Moving made me grateful for sharing these accomplishments with my CrossFit Proper family.

Whats your favorite Proper memory?
My two favorite memory is that Coach  Rich helped me hit a 300# future method back squat.

Whats the biggest improvement for yourself?
I think my biggest accomplishment has been being able to reach my strength goals with the help of the coaches at Proper.

What’s your next goal?
My next goal is to improve on my Olympic lifts, in particular, the snatch. My snatch is my worst enemy.

Whats your favorite and least favorite movement?
My favorite movement by far is the hang power clean. Team Nasty Girls all the way 😉 I’m not sure if it would be considered a movement but I DESPISE running, just plain HATE it. Hahaha (Maybe I should have said that I would try to improve on that)

“Ciara M.”

Ciara at a local competition.

20 years-old, Student

What brought you to CrossFit?
It was all moms’ idea (I didn’t want to go). She found out about it from my brothers fiancé, who heard about from her friend, who I later met and have now have been with for about 2 years. Kind of funny. Then I ended up loving CrossFit !!

Why do you love Proper?
The coaches! They’re always pushing you to be better while helping you on the way, it’s a good mix. They really concentrate on form and make sure that everyone is doing the movements to the best of their ability and correctly. We do a lot of stretching and mobility, which definitely helps with WODs. Also everyone at the box is friendly and encouraging so it makes working out better!

Whats your favorite Proper memory?
Hmm? There’s so many. One time we were doing line drills, running with a partner on our back. I got the speed wobbles and fell to the ground, Christian tumbled over me straight to the floor. It was pretty funny!

Whats the biggest improvement for yourself?
My biggest improvement has been gaining strength. It’s exciting to see how much strength I’ve gained since I first started, back when I could barely handle just the bar in a WOD to know even doing some of the WODs prescribed! Whats your next goal? Double unders! UGH.

Whats your favorite and least favorite movement?
My favorite is kipping pull ups! Or the clean. My least favorite movement is thrusters,no doubt. I hate them so much!

“Shawn H.”

25 years-old, Guest Services

Shawn at the Spartan Race

What brought you to CrossFit?
The thing that brought me to CrossFit was the challenge of doing and learning something new.

Why do you love Proper?
I love Proper because of how supportive its members and staff are.  We all want each other to succeed in our goals and ultimately “Be Better”.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?
My favorite CrossFit Proper memory is probably participating in this years Open. It was a lot of fun to cheer on my fellow Proper members to get in one more rep.

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?
The biggest improvement in myself is definitely my mobility.  Before I started CrossFit I was really stiff throughout my whole body which prevented me from achieving proper movement.  Now that I am more mobile I can do squats, front racks, kips, etc. more effectively and efficiently.

What’s your next goal?
My next goal is to work on my OHS and snatch.

What’s your favorite movement?
Pull Ups

What movement do you hate?
OHS and Snatch

“April F.”

36.6 years-old. Graphic Designer | Wife | Mom

What brought you to CrossFit?

The easier answer is:

April makes time for CrossFit with the Nooner class.

I was driving behind a black truck with a giant CrossFit Proper sticker on the back window and I liked the logo – so once I got to the office I Googled it. That same ‘search’ would lead me to pictures of Christmas Abbott. So I signed up for the Elements class.

What brought me back after the first class and since, is the decision to stop settling and  to build a stronger me. Physically AND mentally.

Why do you love Proper?

The humbleness. The coaches. The unity. The motivation. The smiles. The NOONERS! …and Kettlebell.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?

Crying in frustration, trying to power thru one of my first WODs. (I’m most definitely NOT a crier.) I remember lying there and actually watching one of the tears disappear into the mat. I raised my head, taxed and drenched in sweat – to Christian waiting for a high-five. I stood up, and apologized for crying. He smiled and said, “welcome to Crossfit”.

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

Flipping that mental “no excuses” switch. I want “it” now, and I’m that much stronger than I was yesterday.

What’s your next goal?

Getting my body fat% down and some Kip Pullups!

What’s your favorite movement? Rowing

What brought you to CrossFit?

We had just moved to Corona not long before and I was looking for a ‘gym’ to workout at. I came to an Intro class at the old box and came away with 1) Sore arms that I couldn’t straighten out, 2) A desire to be better and be competitive with myself and 3) a love CrossFit.

Why do you love Proper?

CrossFit Proper is a true definition of community. People are so encouraging during and after workouts to help you get through the tough movements. I can remember Jesse telling me when I first started at the Intro class that I should try out other boxes to see how they compared. I didn’t really even consider it because it was so comfortable at Proper and they made the new members feel like part of the family right away. I love getting the opportunity to help new members and work alongside (aka: compete with) those members who I came into the box with (Daisy, Glenn, Johnny, etc…).

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?

There are so many group moments that come to mind (Christmas parties, Open competitions, the M.A.D. WOD, etc…). However, the one moment that stands out is when I got my first muscle-up in August 2013. I had been working with Coach Char in the mornings for a couple weeks on technique and it just ‘happened’ one day…twice! I was drunk on CrossFit the rest of the day. It’s one of those movements that really made me feel like I had improved.

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

My overall strength has improved dramatically. I had been running quite a bit before CrossFit, so knew I could handle some of the endurance parts of a workout. Unfortunately, my upper-body strength was zero. Slowly, things improved (pull-ups, new PR’s, etc…). I feel so much stronger today than I did when I started. There is a still a lot of room to grow, but I’ve hit goals along the way that give me the confidence to keep working at it.

What’s your next goal?

I have a list of CrossFit goals on my desk at work that I look at each day. There are two that really stand out… Butterfly Pullups and Handstand Walk. I can get about 3-4 reps/steps of each, but I really want to be more proficient in that. Body weight/gymnastics movements in general are next on the list for me. 🙂

What’s your favorite movement?

It would have to be the Clean. Every time that comes up in a WOD, I’m excited because it’s great to lift heavy stuff. I like the clean because you have to be so explosive to get the bar up to your shoulders (unlike, say, a deadlift). I’m 5lbs away from 200lbs and hope to hit 225 at some point this year. Side note: I’m probably one of the very few who also love when a running/wall ball WOD comes up. Hooray for wall balls!

What movement do you hate?

Push-ups. I know it’s not anything fancy, but I really am not a fan of push-ups. Normal, wide, diamond,…. doesn’t matter.

“Erika S.”

When she’s not CrossFitting, she’s riding…or shooting guns.

38 years-old, Police Officer

What brought you to CrossFit?

About four years ago I was working uniformed patrol in Costa Mesa.  An unsavory parolee my partner was contacting informed me he knows I work out a 24 HR Fitness and told me what times and on which days I am in the gym.  I never returned to that 24 Hr Fitness.  During workouts or off duty in general, I do not want to encounter him or anyone else who might recognize me as a police officer.  I spoke to a Sgt at work who Crossfits.  He showed me youtube videos of Crossfitting and convinced me to give it a try. When I visited Proper, I was hooked.  As a side benefit, I work out where I won’t get shanked by my fellow athletes (for the most part).

Why do you love Proper?

Proper’s attitude toward fitness and community involvement.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?

Drinking beer with Ashley Wysocki during a St Patricks day WOD.

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

Overall Strength.

What’s your next goal?

To be able to back squat either Tomas brother and twerk like Daisy.

What’s your favorite movement?

The kip in general. I not only kip my way through pull ups, dips, and handstand push-ups; I now kip my way through life.

What movement do you hate?

Turkish Get Ups.  Because of this movement I not only hate the entire country of Turkey, I am boycotting all of Eastern Europe.

“Robert H.”

Police Officer

Robert has been a CrossFit Proper member for quite some time now. He’s consistent and dedicated in his workouts and what we especially like about him is that you’ll see him wearing a weighted vest during a good portion of the wods. It’s just nice to know that a police officer can hold his own and then some!

He’s also known for being able to workout at anytime. Due to his changing work schedule, he’s been known to come in early mornings and evenings. He makes fitness a priority. No excuses for this guy.

“Glenn T.”

31 years old, Claims Investigator

What brought you to CrossFit?

Mikey started CrossFitting and one day I noticed that he was thinning out real well.  I asked him what he was doing and he mentioned that he was CrossFitting.  I had no idea what it meant, but I knew that it was working for him.  He told me a little bit about the things he was doing and I kept thinking to myself, “There was no way I’d be able to keep up with him, let alone a group of people.”  Like most people, I had a monthly globo gym membership, but it just wasn’t working and I wasn’t motivated and need something more.  So I decided to give it a shot.

Why do you love Proper?

The people are the main reason I love Proper.  Proper is a family.  Our support for each other extends beyond the WODs. I love the fact that we are not just a group of people trying to get fit, but we genuinely care about each others well-beings and our community.  We may not have the bells and whistle of some other boxes, but last time I checked those don’t make you stronger or work harder.  We get stronger and better everyday because of the support of our family around us.  So next time your struggling through a WOD or just trying to get through a tough day, just know that there is a family at Proper encouraging you and supporting you each step of the way.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?

My favorite CrossFit Proper Memory was our first day at CrossFit Proper.  On April 24, 2012, I did the intro WOD, 200 meter run; 15-12-9 of Ring Pulls, Push Ups, and Air Squats; and of course a 200 meter run.  Coach Carissa ran through all the movements with us and then 3-2-1, GO!  I remember finishing that WOD and pretty much passing out.  My ears were ringing, I couldn’t talk, and I was pretty much useless.  I was slouched on a box with my back against the wall gasping for air.  I don’t remember how long it took me, but I finally mustered up the strength to stand up, handed my keys to Melissa, walked to the car, and plopped down in the passenger seat.  From that point on, I knew that I was going to love being here!  It’s my favorite memory because I look back and see where I was and where I am now and can’t help but smile on how much I’ve progressed.  Don’t get me wrong, there are days when I feel just like I did on my first day, but now I know that I’ll recover and will be better because I made it through.

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

I think that the biggest improvement for myself is actually two fold and I believe they go hand in hand and that is my form and technique.  The Coaches at CrossFit Proper are so knowledgeable on how to move properly that they have helped me so much in correcting my form and techniques.  Having proper form and technique is everything, from an air squat to the snatch and everything in between.  Keeping your proper form keeps you from injuring yourself and refining your technique helps you lift heavier weight.  By listening to our Coaches, I’ve been able to refine both my form and technique and it shows.  On June 28, 2012, I had a 165# Back Squat, a 105# Shoulder Press, and a 255# Deadlift for CrossFit Total of 525#.  Almost 18 months later, I have a 255# Back Squat, a 160# Shoulder Press, and a 405# Deadlift for a CrossFit Total of 820#

What’s your next goal?

My next goal is getting over my fear and being comfortable being upside down, which hopefully will lead to my first handstand push up.

What’s your favorite movement?

The Clean and Jerk.  My thought is that if I can Clean the bar, might as well try to Jerk it too.  By doing so, I can attempt to PR two movements in one try!  You can’t succeed if you never try.

What movement do you hate?

Thrusters.  Thrusters are one of two movements in Fran and Fran is one of those CrossFit Benchmarks that gives me anxiety every time it comes up.

55 years-old, VP Insurance Services

Carmen is a very special lady and she is my personal hero. She had very specific needs when she joined us back in 2010 – she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She wanted to continue to CrossFit through her therapies. There were days when she’d come in and you could see the toll the therapies were taking on her.  To be honest, it was darn right scary. There were times when she’d start the scaled wod and could not finish. Yet, she would come back again and again, never letting cancer beat her.

She continues to CrossFit and is an avid learner of movement. It takes a very special person to endure what she had gone through, let alone CrossFit throughout.  She is the living, breathing example of my most favorite John Wooden quote:

“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”

Thank you Carmen for letting us be a part of your recovery and for being such a supportive member and encourager of others. You are my hero and a champion for the cause, a classy, sassy lady. We will greatly miss you.

Dynamic Duo Tami and Michelle.

What brought you to CrossFit?

My friend Michelle Schiefelbien brought me to Crossfit. I was doing Bootcamp and thought it would be fun to try something new. Now I am addicted!

Why do you love Proper?

I love Crossfit Proper for the people and the energy in the building when you are working out.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?

My favorite Crossfit memory is when we did the Memorial Day Murph. It was a tough workout but I just kept thinking about the soldier that died protecting our country and then thought this isn’t so bad. If those men and women can fight for us then I can get through this workout. I actually like the hero WODs as they mean something and they are usually tough. The energy at the box that day was awesome too!

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

Biggest improvement for myself is that I have lost about 20 pounds and I feel stronger especially my upper body.

What’s your next goal?

My next goal is to master double unders and at least 1 rope climb.

What’s your favorite movement?

My favorite movement is probably Dead Lifts. My legs are strong and I feel I can keep up with some of the competitors in the group.

What movement do you hate?

My least favorite movement are of course Burpees. Does anyone like them?

“Johnny H.”

What brought you to CrossFit?

When I joined Crossfit Proper, it was because I was unhappy with my body and was tired of working out at la fitness. The same routines weren’t working for me. I needed something more. Something that would really push me and make me fit.

Johnny at a local competition, hitting it hard!

Why do you love Proper?

I love proper for many reasons. Our coaches are absolutely amazing, they push me to my limits and are always encouraging. They also have an extreme passion for the sport and it shows in their attitudes and coaching. Another reason is because I feel like all the members are family to me. Every time i walk in, I feel at home and am excited to be there. Everyone in the gym is super nice and welcoming and it makes for a comfortable environment.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?

I would have to say my favorite memory is when we had the Crossfit Proper Prom! It was nice being able to see all the crossfitters cleaned up and dressed formally. I actually love all the events we have.

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

the biggest improvement for me is my strength. Since I first started, my strength has gone through the roof. My improvements have increased everywhere though, not just in strength. I am stronger, faster, healthier and in the best shape of my life. Every day i get better and better.

What’s your next goal?

My next goal is to really work on my ground to overhead movement. I struggle with it and really need to take a step back and focus on perfecting it.

What’s your favorite movement?

My favorite movement is probable the muscle up. Even though i need to work on it, it is fun and satisfying to know I can do it.

What movement do you hate?

Snatches! They are by far my weakest link. I struggle with these dramatically. I know when I get better at them, I wont hate them any more.

“Cathi M.”

48 years-old. Mom & grandmother.

Cathi in her first handstand! Wow!

What brought you to CrossFit?

My daughter Ciara and I were going to group training at a local gym.  I was telling my son’s girlfriend, I was bored and felt I was wasting money.  She told me about Crossfit and how much she loved it.  She said her Crossfit in Orange County had a few women my age and encourage me to try it.  She said her friend Mark was going to Crossfit Proper in Corona and he loved it.  Ciara and I were both hooked instantly.

Why do you love Proper?

I love the coaches’ and just the positive atmosphere at Proper.  Sometimes I look at the WOD board and become nervous and start to doubt my ability to finish.  BUT … with the great coaches’ and my CFP friends, I surprise myself and complete the workout.  I always feel accomplished when I’m done and never regret doing it.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?

I have so many…  I remember doing a mile run WOD, I was really struggling to finish.  Brandon finished his mile, but ran/walked my last 800 meters with me and encourage me to finish.  It was so sweet of him.

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

I feel stronger every day and love being excited about working out.

What’s your next goal?

My goal is to run a full mile without needing to slow down and walk, mastering double unders, pull ups and becoming leaner and stronger.

“Destiny K.”

25 years-old. Student

Destiny is in the center getting some pull-ups in with our strong girls!

What brought you to Crossfit?

Before I even heard about Crossfit, I had been researching ways to get healthier. I read all about the Paleo/Primal diet and loved the concept. Andy and I tried it out and have been hooked ever since. A lot of the blogs I read for Paleo recipes and information would mention Crossfit. The concept was so out of the box and I loved the idea: constantly varied, high intensity, functional movements. It seemed right up my ally. Even though I hardly worked out before then, I liked that it didn’t follow the traditional rules about fitness. When we first walked into the box, however, I was completely intimidated. Everyone was in the middle of a WOD and they looked like gladiators. I wasn’t sure I could do it, but I just kept going and then I was hooked.

Why do you love Proper?

Proper has changed my life. Just a few years ago I would have never thought I’d be spending 5 or 6 days a week at the gym and enjoying it. The community at Proper is so strong. The members cheer you on whether you’re first or last. Proper offers support from all directions. I’ve met some of my best friends at the box.

What’s your favorite Crossfit Proper Memory?

I have so many, but what tops the charts is when my mom got her first banded pull-ups. As soon as I started Crossfit, I wanted my mom to join too. I tried to convince her for months to join. It got to the point that we were banned from bringing up Crossfit at dinner because she was so tired of hearing about it. After 4 months of badgering, she finally caved. She saw the results Andy and I were getting and wanted to try it out herself. I dragged her into the box to talk to Carissa and she signed up. Now she’s hooked and everyone else in the family is sick of hearing her talk about Crossfit. Now she’s doing pull-ups and handstands and lifting heavy weight. A lot of people have parents who can barely walk, let alone run a mile or handstand walk. I guess I’m just proud to have such a badass mom.

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

My first day, I couldn’t even finish the WOD, so I’ve really come a long way. What amazes me is how fast you can get good at something. When I first started, there is no way I’d believe that in a little over a year I’d be doing handstand pushups, strict pull-ups and rope climbs.

What’s your next goal?

I have so many. Stringing double-unders, bar muscle ups, and handstand walks are at the top of my list.

“Stacy I.”

39 year-old, United Rentals Trench Safety Branch Manager-Riverside, CA

Stacy doing turkish get-ups.

What brought you to CrossFit?

I have always been athletic and part of an athletic team. When I left Denver and made the career move to SoCal I was searching for a new athletic lifestyle in a new community.  I had trained for several marathons and half marathons, but my training got stale.  I was on a corporate trip in New York and watched the crossfit games on ESPN, it sparked my interest and looked like something I would enjoy, plus spice up my training. When I got home I googled crossfit gyms near Riverside and came across Proper.  After meeting with Carissa and Jesse, going the first week meeting the Proper family and coaches I knew Proper was the place for me.

Why do you love Proper?

It’s my California family!  I love the atmosphere, the motivation, the inspiration – it gives me the desire and will to “Be Better than I was yesterday”.  Everyone is there to better their lives, whether it be a healthier lifestyle, training for a crossfit competition or training for an endurance race.  Regardless of the reason, everyone comes together as a team/family and encourages each other to “Be Better”.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?

The Tough Mudder…. Mud, ice, barbwire, dirt slides and electricity!  The best way to spent time with the Proper Family!

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

A personal and professional lifestyle change – the “Be Better” mentality has improved who I am. “Be Better” is my way of life, not only have I incorporated it in my races and personal challenges but I have also affiliated it with my career. I have developed the culture in the branch I manage at United Rentals, our theme for 2013 is “Be Better than you were yesterday”.

What’s your next goal?

My personal goal is to finish a half ironman and a full ironman.  My professional goal is to impact my peers, co-workers and employees with the “Be Better” culture and grow the business.

“Yovana G.”

28-years old. Occupational Therapist

Yovana at her first CrossFit team competition.

What brought you to CrossFit?

When I got diagnosed with stage 2 cancer in March of 2012, I got the ‘fighter’ bug in me that wanted to do everything possible to take back control of my body. I went completely out of my comfort level of just being a runner and signed up for what I figured would be the most extreme form of ‘working out’ that I could get into.

Why do you love Proper?

When I first started coming in, I thought it would just be a place I went to a few times a week, get a good workout in, then leave and do it again the next day. Instead, I got a whole new family that helped me get through some of the weirdest/hardest times of my life. Everyone from the box at some point or another went through a part of my journey with cancer with me (whether it was Jesse and Blair trying to console me when I was crying outside in the parking lot during Fran after a day of radiation, or Coach Rich telling me to finish my WOD when I wanted to quit because I had no motivation at 5am, or Ryan, Coach Mike T, Ross and Coach X arguing to each other about who was going to tell me my form was wrong during a front squat because they were afraid my ‘radiation therapy’ rage would come out!). Everyone at the box contributed to my not wanting to give up. Those are things and people you don’t just walk away from, I’ll be with Proper for a long long time.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?

My first week at Proper I was in at 5am with Coach Rich and the WOD called for hand stand push ups. Instead, he convinced me to just try out handstands against the wall to get comfortable with being upside down. I flipped up, slammed into the wall, then fell over so hard I almost took out the ski machine. Welcome to CrossFit!! I still hate being upside down to this day.

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

Being comfortable with being completely out of my comfort zone. If you would have told me a few years back I’d be crossfitting and throwing heavy weights around, and yelling and screaming and being excited about wall-balls and burpees, I’d have said no. That fear component in my life has sort of been replaced by the want to do all sorts of things people tell me I can’t do now!

What’s your next goal?

Hopefully getting accepted to school this Spring for my 2nd degree in Food and Nutritional Science, so I can continue to turn everyones kiddos into Paleo eaters! That and finally mastering double-unders. Maybe. I hate jumpropes.

“Ashley W.”

28 years-old. City of Corona Parks and Recreation Coordinator

Ashley W. gettin’ her toes to bars

What brought you to CrossFit?

I was just completing my Master’s Degree and did not want to spend another minute in the classroom. I needed a new “hobby” and challenge to focus on, and I had a conversation with a friend about CrossFit. I came home from Havasu and started researching different CrossFit gyms in the area. I’ve been hooked ever since!

Why do you love Proper?

My first CrossFit gym wasn’t exactly a “gym,” it was daily park WODs using only our body weight. I got tired of doing that and looked for new gyms. The environment at Proper was warm and inviting but extremely competitive at the same time! As someone who grew up playing organized team sports, CrossFit was a new challenge for me because I was now having to rely on myself to get through every workout (especially workouts with pull-ups….ugh), but every time I turned around, there was someone there cheering me on and encouraging me to finish the workout. I can be guaranteed to have someone in my class that I am extremely competitive with, but at the end of it, walk up to and let them know how awesome they did, and I can expect the same back. That level of competition and encouragement is what keeps me coming back day after day….even for the pull-up workouts!

Beyond that, Proper is always looking to help out someone else. With the many events we participate in, and organizations we donate to, it’s great to know that a group of people I’m affiliated with are taking the time to not only improve their own wellbeing, but also helping out others in the interim.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?

My favorite CrossFit Proper memory is running over Rich’s kettle bell with my car and ruining his world record time on his workout, haha!!

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

My biggest improvements are learning how to eat clean, getting my first pull-up and getting my first rope climb. I never thought in my entire life I’d be able to do one pull-up, let alone 100 in a workout!

What’s your next goal?

My next goal is to start a paleo challenge and continue with the challenge even when it is over. My lifestyle doesn’t always allow me to eat clean, and I need to start focusing on making my health a priority to compliment my social life. I know it will be difficult, but with life comes challenges and the ability to find a balance between staying healthy and having fun!

“Mark S.”

54 years-old. Business Executive

Mark S. at the Camp Pendleton Mud Run with his “all ladies” team. What an inspiration to the youngsters!

What brought you to CrossFit?

When my son, Rich and his wife moved in with us while buying a house, he kept talking about this new extreme fitness routine he was doing called Crossfit. When he heard how bad my cholesterol was and how much weight I gained while traveling for work he pushed me until I tried it out. It was awesome, I rode to and from and performed every WOD with my son. I was encouraged and received positive feedback every day from Jesse, Carissa, Christian and Char. The made me feel like I could do anything. Everyone one at the box made me feel like I was a Champion at the end of every WOD. The challenged me every day to do more and better, and cut me no slack. I became an Athlete again. Crossfit Proper changed my life and my priorites.

Why do you love Proper?

Proper is like my family. They treat me like a friend not a client. They know me, what motivates me, what I need to get better at and what I am good at. I love Proper because it isn’t about being a business it is about people being better. It’s the people.

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?

My first WOD. The one the Carissa was ready to call 911 for me. I have a lot of great memories.

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

I have lost 40lbs. I have great cholesterol readings and have improved my health scores in every area. Every year the doctor tells me to keep doing Crossfit; it has added years to my life. I am stronger and fitter now than 20 years ago. I lift more now than when I was in College. I still suck at a lot of stuff, but I am way better than when I started.

What’s your next goal?

My goal will always be to challenge the leaders on the white board. To reach the level where my times, weight, reps are within site of the best in the Masters Division. My true goal is to get better every day, to try and stay with the youngsters.

“34 years-old, Mom of three active boys”

What brought you to CrossFit?

I was looking for something different to do besides my usual running routine and happened to come across Crossfit OnRamp in the City of Corona flyer that came in the mail. I looked up the website, googled crossfit and thought, what the heck I’ll give it a try.

Why do you love Proper?

I can’t say enough good things about Proper. From the moment I walked in and was greeted by everyone to all the great friends I’ve made. Everyone’s family at Proper and it makes it special!

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?

I wouldn’t say my favorite but most memorable was when I was the only one that showed up to a 7 o’clock class. Christian asked me what workout I wanted to do, I think I might have just finished the onramp program, I said whatever. Christian said alright you’re gonna do the filthy fifty! I had no clue what it was or what he was setting me up for, I  made it to the wall balls and had to stop. I sat outside for a good thirty minutes trying to recover and hold back the urge of puking!

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

I’ve improved at everything since joining Proper. When I came I couldn’t touch my toes, do pull up or push up!

What’s your next goal?

I’m definitely ready to step it up to the next level for myself. When I first joined Proper I had just had my 3rd son, life was crazy and working out was hard to fit in. I would just show up and do what my body would allow with few hours of sleep from having a little baby at home. Slowly I’ve been able to see results but am ready to get my nutrition dialed in and  step it up in the workouts, I’m excited to see the results.

CrossFit appealed to me because I was tired of sitting around on my ass on the couch, the usual L.A. Fitness routine was getting a little monotonous, and the occasional open gyms for basketball and volleyball wasn’t very interesting to me anymore.

Why do you love Proper?

What can I say, Proper provides so many opportunities for outlets and social activity.  Also, I love how we can all just hang out and have a good time, sweat it out, and get at WoD’s together!

What’s your favorite CrossFit Proper Memory?

When I first walked into the gym, you guys just literally moved…and I remember Christian saying all like, “Uhh, excuse the mess…we usually have posters up and everything, and I swear the gym usually isn’t this disorganized or dirty…” It made me chuckle a bit because you know, first impressions are everything.  LoL!!!

What’s the biggest improvement for yourself?

My biggest improvement for myself was that I can do pull-ups, and actually do all the barbell work now.  Never have I ever done all the stuff I can do now.  I love it!!!

What’s your next goal?

My next goal with CrossFit is applying the gain I receive in the gym, to competitions whenever I can.  Not going to lie, because I don’t play varsity basketball or volleyball anymore, I need a new Competitive Outlet…I guess the next goal is using what I learned and getting into competing.  I remember Christian telling me…”Welcome to the Sport of CrossFit!” I can’t wait…=)
